Summer Street Festivals & Fairs in San Francisco
There’s way too much in the way of festivals all around greater San Francisco to cover the subject exhaustively here, but we thought we’d spotlight just a few of the can’t-miss ones coming down the pike.
Begun in June and running through August 18th, the 82nd annual Stern Grove Festival is once again bringing free outdoor concerts to the Sigmund Stern Grove amphitheater each Sunday. Among the top-draw performers taking the stage in the coming weeks are Toots and the Maytals (July 21st), the Psychedelic Furs (August 4th), and the Isley Brothers (August 18th).
Especially (but not exclusively!) if you have kids in tow on your Tilden Hotel summer getaway, you might consider taking in the high-flying joys of the free and beloved Berkeley Kite Festival, which fills the skies over the Berkeley Marina July 27th and 28th.
On August 3rd and 4th, meanwhile, San Francisco’s Japantown District will host the 46th annual Nihonmachi Street Fair, a fantastic celebration of Asian-Pacific American culture and heritage. Expect some fabulous food, music, dance performances, and other entertainment along Post Street between Laguna and Filmore from 11 AM to 6 PM Saturday and Sunday.
More awesome tunes will be served up August 17th and 18th at the Polk Street Blues Festival, which plays out on two stages on Polk between California and Sutter and also features food, craft beer, wine tastings, and more.
At the tail end of summer, look forward to Oakland’s Eat Real Fest, a food festival at Jack London Square featuring dozens of food vendors plus craft beer, wine, and cocktails.
Miscellaneous “Live Like a Local” Hotspots Near the Tilden Hotel
If you find yourself at our boutique San Francisco hotel on a Tuesday, Thursday, or Saturday, consider heading over to the nearby Embarcadero District and taking in one of the country’s best farmer’s markets. The Ferry Plaza Farmers Market draws nearly 40,000 shoppers each week and features some of the finest producers and chefs in the Bay Area. (It’s on from 10 AM to 2 PM on Tuesdays and Thursdays and from 8 AM to 2 PM on Saturdays.)
You can always combine the joys of the Ferry Plaza Farmers Market with a delectable Vietnamese meal at the much-loved Slanted Door restaurant in the Ferry Building, which offers fabulous dining overlooking the water.
You might also consider a quick safari to the popular Mission District, perhaps paying a visit to the legendary Tartine Bakery (600 Guerrero St) or La Taqueria (2889 Mission St), which some say whips up the finest burritos in the country. Now that’s the kind of claim you most definitely want to investigate for yourself!
