TILDEN HOTEL WELCOMES SAN FRANCISCO-BASED ABSTRACT ARTIST LAURIE BLESSEN
IN BI-MONTHLY ART DISPLAY
Artist’s work to be featured October 1-November 30, 2019

download pdf

SAN FRANCISCO (September 18, 2019) – Tilden Hotel announces Laurie Blessen as the latest artist for its upcoming two-month local artist showcase on the ground floor of the 118-room boutique San Francisco hotel. Free to enjoy by the public and hotel guests, the Tilden Hotel rotating art series shines a light on San Francisco’s spirited creativity and engaging community while directly supporting local artists. Blessen’s work, in the form of abstract color field print, will be on display October 1-November 30.

A designer in both graphics and furniture by trade, Blessen recently discovered her passion for monotypes working on an etching press and is now a committed full-time abstract color field printmaker. She received a bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design from the California College of the Arts.

Blessen notes a recurring motif in her work are doors and windows, signaling how “light gets let in” and reinforces strength. She says, “Working in abstraction allows the fullest expression of my life. Prolific and driven to get the complex emotions that words fail to express. The colors have a voice and the lines shows movement. Together they tell my narrative.”

Guests interested in obtaining one of Blessen’s featured works are welcome to purchase a piece right from the lobby walls.

To kick off the two-month residency, Tilden Hotel will host a casual welcome reception on Tuesday, October 1 from 5-8 p.m. in the lobby to honor Blessen in what is known as Tilden Tuesday. The event is a bi-monthly gathering that takes place on the first Tuesday of every other month. Open to all, the night features complimentary elevated bar bites and beverages crafted by The Douglas Room, the hotel’s signature restaurant and bar. The event will extend to the hotel’s open and airy Backyard space.

“Laurie’s art has a certain magic and richness in abstraction,” said Jason Webb, general manager of the Tilden Hotel. “We’re excited to showcase her work to our guests and the community through our Tilden Hotel Art Program and hope the display helps raise awareness for Laurie as a rising San Francisco artist.”

The Tilden Hotel Art Program is supported through the local community and various local organizations including Wildflowers Institute, Hospitality House, the De Marillac Academy and more. With an emphasis on all things local, Tilden Hotel purchases an art piece from each spotlighted artist that is added to the hotel’s growing private collection of local works. 100 percent of proceeds of all art purchased at Tilden Tuesday will go directly to the artists.

Tilden Hotel is a proud partner of the SF First Thursday Art Walk, a community-led monthly event hosted by various gallery owners and artist studios in the Lower Polk and Tenderloin neighborhoods in San Francisco. The Art Walk is every first Thursday of the month from 6-10 p.m.

Free to enjoy by the public and hotel guests, the Tilden Hotel rotating art series shines a light on San Francisco’s spirited creativity and engaging community while directly supporting local artists. Niño’s work, which is inspired by his own dreams and visions, will be on display through September.

Born in Venezuela and from the Andes Mountains, Niño’s entire life has revolved around art. He moved to San Francisco in 2015 to study at the Academy of Art University where he received his Master of Fine Arts. From a very young age he began translating his dreams and visions into art in the form of detailed and intricate lines and shapes, giving a distinctive look and feel to his work.

Niño says, “It is like immersing myself into the darkness and bringing a small fragment out into the light.”

He makes art with the hope that his work will bring a little spark of light into the soul of who is looking at it. Guests interested in obtaining one of Niño’s featured works are welcome to purchase a piece right from the lobby walls.

To kick off the two-month residency, Tilden Hotel will host a casual welcome reception on Tuesday, August 6 from 5-8 p.m. in the lobby to honor Niño in what is known as Tilden Tuesday. TILDEN HOTEL DEBUTS “[AN] INTRODUCTION,” SERIES OF SILK SCREEN PRINTS BY LOCAL ARTIST PARISA GHADERI (pdf)

Serigraphs on display in the hotel lobby from April 2-May 31, 3019

SAN FRANCISCO (March 13, 2019) – Tilden Hotel welcomes local visual artist and designer Parisa Ghaderi in its upcoming two-month artist showcase on the ground floor of the hotel. Free to enjoy by the public and hotel guests, the Tilden Hotel rotating art series shines a light on San Francisco’s spirited creativity and engaging community while directly supporting local artists. Ghaderi’s serigraphs focus on one character, “Dumpling Girl,” which was originally created in Ghaderi’s youth.

Ghaderi’s work is driven by the desire to create worlds where all are invited, and her spring showcase of [An] Introduction symbolizes a new beginning in the subject’s story. Dumpling Girl bears an innocently round body that can be seen as a home for possibility or a vast void. Her limbs act to punctuate her personality whether in focused contemplation or acting as a provocateur. The expressions of her body act as a conduit to the wordlessness that we all have inside of us, that which moves but makes no noise. Guests interested in obtaining one or more of the works in the serigraphs are welcome to purchase a piece right from the lobby walls.

To kick off the two-month residency, Tilden Hotel will host a casual welcome reception on Tuesday, April 2 from 5-8 p.m. in the lobby to honor Ghaderi in what is known as Tilden Tuesday. The event is a bi-monthly gathering that takes place on the first Tuesday of every other month. Open to all, the night features complimentary elevated bar bites and beverages crafted by The Douglas Room, the hotel’s signature restaurant and bar.

“We are excited to spotlight Parisa’s work over the next two months at Tilden Hotel and add one of her pieces to our growing art collection,” said Jason Webb, general manager of the Tilden Hotel. “In a city where new ideas and products are constantly brought to life, it’s exciting to be an ambassador for the crux of what makes this city so special—its people.”

JUNE: Tan Sirinumas with Poetry by Jesse James Johnson
Originally from Thailand, Sirinumas combines poetry, photography and sculpture to create three-dimensional designs, which articulate the meeting of San Francisco architecture and nature, and the poetry of personal history and memory, layered with his immense love for his home in San Francisco.

AUGUST: Janet Williams
Williams’ Mindscapes is a series of photographs that range from various adventures at Burning Man to daily San Franciscan scenes observed. It also includes self-portraits, Rorschach-style ink blots and excerpts of personal poetry collaged together to make a personal mindscape.

OCTOBER: Chris Cook
Cook is a multi-talented artist and musician who works in a variety of mediums, including textile screen-printing, decoupage, mural painting and electronic-based installations. He is heavily involved in the San Francisco art scene and works regularly with several non-profit organizations such as The Central City SRO Collaboration (CCSRO) and CounterPulse.

DECEMBER: Mike Gosbee
Inspired by the Dada art movement, Gosbee is drawn to abstract pieces for the process in which he finds the beauty in chance configurations, the overlooked layers and its complexity. Gosbee creates ceramics and collages of rearranged ripped and cut paper.

Tilden Hotel Art Program is supported through the local community, the Tilden Art Committee and its partner Hospitality House, whose community program has funded studios for local artists with socioeconomic struggles. Each year, more than 3,500 artists access the program. 100 percent of proceeds of art purchased at Tilden Tuesday will go directly to the artists.
