Traveling With Your Pet?

The Tilden Hotel is Pet Friendly!

For some, a trip is no fun without their four-legged companion. A trip together can be a wonderful bonding experience for you and your dog.

On your most challenging days you can always count on your pet to greet you at the door when you come home or cuddle up in your lap in the evening. They are a vital part of your home life all year long, but when your life takes you away from home are you thinking of them before you head out the door? According to the American Pet Products Manufacturers Association, Americans spend more than $38 billion a year on their pets If traveling with your pet, don’t forget to pack vaccination records, food, bowl, leash, waste scoop, grooming supplies and medication, as well as a favorite toy to give your pet a sense of familiarity.

Top 10 Travel Tips for Traveling With Your Pet

  1. Plan ahead. Prepare to include your pets in the fun by making a list of the extra gear and supplies that you will need and any special reservations that you may require. Include food, litter, leashes, toys, beds, medications and pet carriers. Just to be safe, carry notes regarding your pet’s medical history and your veterinarian’s contact information.
  2. Have a practice round. If your pet is not used to car or plane travel, introduce him to the carrier prior to departure. Toss in a favorite toy or familiar object and take a spin around the block. Make sure that the carrier is airline-compliant and sturdy enough to make the trip.
  3. Travel green. Leaving home does not have to mean abandoning planet-friendly habits. Use biodegradable waste disposal bags when cleaning up after your pooch. If traveling with a cat, use a cat litter that offers odor control, clumping for easy clean-up and all-natural, flushable ingredients.
  4. Keep moving. Just like humans, your pets need as much exercise away from home as they do in their own environment. Make sure you make plenty of stops along the way and allow every member of your family to stretch his or her legs and breathe fresh air. Once at your destination, include your pet in hikes, walks on the beach or a visit to a local park.
  5. Drink up. Make sure that your pet has access to clean water throughout your travels. A pet’s body is comprised of 80 percent water– proper hydration is key to good health at home and on the road.
  6. Be mindful of the temperature. Knowing the temperature patterns in your destination city plays a big role in how you pack.
  7. Traveling by Air? Be Familiar with the airline policies and know the restrictions and requirements. Affix a label to your pet’s carrier with your permanent and final destination contact information. Do not feed your pet for four to six hours prior to travel. Put ice cubes in the carrier’s water tray – a full water bowl can spill and cause discomfort during the flight.
  8. Planning a road trip with Rover? Even the most enthusiastic traveler can become agitated and anxious on a very long ride. Your dog will appreciate some familiar things from home – a favorite blanket, for instance, and some toys. Bringing drinking water and food from home will help avoid stomach upset. And don’t forget the cleanup supplies, because accidents happen.
  9. Keep the dog contained. Your travel companion should either be in a crate or restrained by a seatbelt made especially for animals. Dogs riding unrestrained in a car can be dangerous to themselves, the humans riding with them and other motorists.
  10. Have fun! Enjoy this extra-special time with your pet. Include him or her in your vacation photo album. Visit a local dog park. It’s likely that your pet will “introduce you” to new friends along the way.
